About me

My name is Fredrik Hellman and I am working in the project Data-Driven Sustainability Management (DDSM). The project aims to revolutionize sustainability management based on developing and implementing data-driven models of the company’s impact on sustainability.

Research plan

In recent years, the urgency of climate change has led to significant policy responses, for example, the European Union’s Corporate Social Responsibility Directive (CSRD). These regulations require meticulous documentation and disclosure of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) topics. The new directives have sparked the need for complex data systems that comply with regulations and connect sustainability data with other data sources for strategic insights. Businesses are tasked with crafting and navigating complex data infrastructures to support these goals, a move that is as strategic as it is mandatory.

My research focuses on developing data management systems that could enhance sustainability reporting and compliance. Businesses need methods to integrate diverse data sources, improving data accuracy, and enabling real-time analytics.

Research questions

The introduction of CSRD generates many research questions and opportunities specifically in data management infrastructures such as data lakehouses and data pipelines.  A data lakehouse could be an essential tool for storing, processing, and integrating multiple data streams. The role of data lakehouses in supporting sustainability reporting and management could be explored through several research questions, such as:

  • How to efficiently build a data collection and management system to support data driven management?
  • What is the infrastructure needed to efficiently process the sustainability data as required by the CSRD?
  • How can various data lakehouse architectures and solutions support real-time sustainability monitoring and reporting, as well as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) calculations?
  • What are the challenges and opportunities in implementing dynamic LCA compared to traditional static LCA?
